U.S. Navy
The U.S. Navy was formed in 1794 after the Continental Navy was disbanded at the end of the Revolutionary War. The U.S. Navy participated in all theaters of the war and was used extensively in the Pacific during the "island hopping" campaign to Japan. They fought above and below the ocean as well as controlling the skies. The U.S. Navy also created construction battalions known as "Seabees" whose motto was "we build, we fight". These men constructed and repaired airfields, supply depots, PT boat bases, and other support centers, as well as fighting on the front lines with the U.S. Marine Corps as sappers and pioneers. U.S. Navy sailors also served aboard merchant ships as gunners for the Naval Armed Guard.
