U.S. Coast Guard

Formed 4th August 1790, it is one of the oldest organizations of the federal government and, until the Navy Department was established in 1798, served as the nation's only armed force afloat.  U.S. Coast Guard sailors served in every theater of the war as well as continuing their missions at home.  In addition to their traditional stateside missions, they guarded the beaches against saboteurs through mounted and dog patrols.  They supervised the loading and unloading of cargo and maintained port security.  Many sailors manned U.S. Navy ships or served as part of mixed crews on U.S. Navy ships.
