Seabees

In early January 1942, permission was granted for forming Construction Detachments, which later became known as "Seabees" in March of 1942.   These units were made up of skilled craftsmen such as electricians, builders, carpenters, surveyors, drivers, and equipment operators.   The Seabees were quite innovative with their work.  If they didn't have what they needed to complete a job, they would improvise and overcome the obstacle and move onto the next project.  More than 325,000 men served with the Seabees during the war in nearly every theater of operations.  In addition to serving in supporting roles building and repairing bases and facilities, men of the Seabees were often used as front line troops working as sappers and pioneers, fighting alongside the Marines as pioneers and sappers.  Due to the nature of their work and the supply chain, Seabees were seen wearing just about every type of uniform combination from the inventories of the Navy, Army, and Marines.
