Formed in mid 1942, the WAVES soon comprised almost 2-1/2 percent of the Navy's personnel during the war. These women, both officers and enlisted, were employed in various rates and jobs state-side freeing up their male counterparts for work overseas.
In late 1942, the SPARS were authorized to be formed by Congress. During the course of the war, about 10,000 women volunteered for service with the U.S. Coast Guard. Like their USN counterparts, the women of the SPARS took over state-side jobs to free up male sailors for duty overseas. The SPARS also manned and operated LORAN Stations within the Continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii.
